Kobo's $150 eReader: First hands-on - Mobile Magazine

By John on May 3, 2010 1:23 PM | No Comments

A couple of looks at the Kobo reader, first from a mobile device mag and the other from the "hometown" Canadian press.

Still looks like the right device for my needs if I'm ever going to get one of these things.

If we ever get to close on a home of our own (something that apparently is going to elude us here in Vegas), I really want to do something like this.

10 Beautiful Cell Phone Concepts That Will Blow Your Mind | TechXav

Some fantastic phone concepts. I've been meaning to post something about the first one for quite some time and keep forgetting to.

Here are some of my favorite designs:

Spirits in the Sky, and on the Ground: My Two Days at Whiteman - Angus Batey

This is pretty cool actually.

Apparently some English pilots were allowed to train on our B-2 bombers. This reporter got to tag along and blog about the experience.

Here is his actual reporting on the subject as well.

Some pretty interesting technology most of us probably didn't know existed.

I still don't have my flying car, though.

Here's an interesting chart of gadgets in recent years. I'd link you directly to the originating site but, well, firewall is blocking it at work.

Nexus One Teardown - iFixit

By John on January 6, 2010 10:30 PM | No Comments

A pretty cool breakdown of the innards of the new Google Nexus One phone.

Not that I've got the cash to get one, mind, but if I did I'd probably pick one up.

'Passenger Behavior' Key to Catching Airline Terrorists - Defense/Middle East - Israel News - Israel National News

"You have to actually look for the things that are dangerous, and not just scan everybody. This calls for a total change in approach to the transportation security issue."

- Rafi Sela, a security consultant at Ben Gurion International Airport

According to the Israelis, who - as you may know - have some experience in dealing with terrorists, relying on privacy-invading scanning machines won't keep us safer. Neither will patty down every brown-skinned male who just *might* be Muslim.

Eye contact, checking the behavior of folks in your airport, and basically NOT TAKING THE LAZY WAY OUT are the keys to defeating terrorist acts in most public venues.

But no, we've got to depend on gadgets instead of skill. I swear, I work in technology and realize that the Mark One Eyeball and the brain behind it is still capable of being better than the best sniffer, camera, or X-Ray nudie picture machine we can build.

Visions of the Future? » Yanko Design

By John on December 28, 2009 3:32 PM | No Comments

I like visiting Yanko. It makes me feel like there are people out there still trying to make our lives better. Here are a few designs that I never got around to linking to, but they are damn cool.

In no particular order of coolness, I start with the kitchen uni-tool. A few of it's uses:

Next up is the folding keystick, which I certainly wish I had when I was on the road a lot.

Another really cool idea that hits home with me is the digital newspaper. Yeah, I'm all about books, but news on the go has increasingly been an issue. This would help out I think.

I'm not sure if the next idea would be plausible or not, but the concept of a cheap, quick water filter is a real need in this world.

Another cool innovation is a cheap disposable laptop.

This map on the go concept is something everyone needs. Though, frankly, people need to learn how to read a damn map first.

I saved what might be the best for last. It is a red light with a timer so you know how much longer you have to wait.

If you can't see the need for this, you are lucky not to drive in heavy traffic. Somebody really needs to make this. Now.

Where the hell was this when Gabriel was born?

Ocean Rescue by Seol-Hee Sohn, Seung-Hyun Yoon & Cheol-Yeon Cho » Yanko Design

So, I've been on a few cruise ships and have had that moment at sea where I wondered what the hell would happen if the damn thing sprung a leak. Sure, they show you where your escape ship is and all - and yes, I was only in the Caribbean - but that somehow didn't seem to be enough for me.

That's why I really, really like this water distilling buoy thingy. If they had these on the ships I have been on, I'd probably had kept one in my cabin or attached to me at all times.

Alright, so Modern Met has led me to Yanko. Expect more posts related to stuff I find on both sites in the near future.

If these ever become reality, I'm definitely keeping a couple in the car just in case.

Tiny, Easy-to-Build Weapons Annihilate Office Boredom

As the title states, these are designs for weapons using items found in a corporate office environment.

Don't go shooting each other's eyes out all at once folks.
