An open letter to conservatives | AmericanDad's Blog

This should be required reading.

A taste:

Dear Conservative Americans,

The years have not been kind to you. I grew up in a profoundly Republican home, so I can remember when you wore a very different face than the one we see now. You've lost me and you've lost most of America. Because I believe having responsible choices is important to democracy, I'd like to give you some advice and an invitation.

First, the invitation: Come back to us.

Now the advice. You're going to have to come up with a platform that isn't built on a foundation of cowardice: fear of people with colors, religions, cultures and sex lives that differ from your own; fear of reform in banking, health care, energy; fantasy fears of America being transformed into an Islamic nation, into social/commun/fasc-ism, into a disarmed populace put in internment camps; and more. But you have work to do even before you take on that task.

Your party -- the GOP -- and the conservative end of the American political spectrum has become irresponsible and irrational. Worse, it's tolerating, promoting and celebrating prejudice and hatred.

And that's just how it starts.

Biden, Biden, Biden...

Can't take that guy anywhere without some verbal gaffe.

He's still WAY preferable to shoot-'em-all-sneering-bastard Cheney. By a long shot.

David Brooks is never going to be anything but a Republican apologist. But at least he dwells in the realm of reality as he tries to explain Barack Obama to any Republican who is still capable of thinking past Tea Bagger talking points.

I think he's pretty close to the mark, at least as far as a Republican can get. Not saying I'm on his bandwagon, but the GOP is going to need a LOT more people like Brooks if you are gonna get folks like me to believe that any of their arguments come from a place of sanity. As for now, there's no reasoning with that party on anything.

A Brief History of Senate Reconciliation Votes - Making Government Transparent and Accountable - Sunlight Foundation Blog

You've heard Rethugs hyperventilate over the process, but they are the masters at using reconciliation to pass legislation the other side is against. Granted, I'm biased, but I'd rather see our citizens get health care than give millionaires more tax cuts. I mean, can't we tax them at 90% like we did back in the old days? Some history on the process.
