What's on your plate? And for how long?

MG at work sent along this disturbing article about a possible coming food shortage. Basically, for a variety of reasons, our total global food reserve is half what it used to be. I doubt we're all going to starve tomorrow or anything but it is one of those things that probably won't be attended to until it is too late. Granted, the end of the article is a bunch of stock tips so you can get rich on the prospect of starvation, but that's capitalism for ya.

I heard this story on South American mountain agriculture last week and remembered a story on quinoa, a good but undervalued food source. I also ran into this story on amaranth over at DailyKos this morning. NPR also covers some food trends in the following linked story (audio link here).
