All my heroes are dead

A while back, Marvel Comics killed off Captain America. There was some strong reaction to it, as well as a mix of introspection and doubt.

That's in the comic books.

Here is where real life interrupts fantasy. Miners in Serbia have found, and scientists in England have determined, a mineral that, by all accounts, is kryptonite. Apparently it has no remarkable powers. Then again, none of us are from Krypton.
